You'll learn standard G C E A tuning, the four chords that unlock hundreds of songs — C, A minor, F and G — and the popular island strum. The final lesson brings them together in the C – G – Am – F progression.
Getting started
Which ukulele to start with
A soprano or concert ukulele is the usual choice for beginners. Concert models have slightly more space between frets, which some people with larger hands find easier.
How to tune a ukulele
Standard tuning is G C E A. Unlike a guitar, the G string is tuned high, giving the ukulele its bright, recognisable sound.
Easy ukulele chords
C major needs only one finger on the third fret of the A string. A minor also uses one finger, and F builds on A minor by adding a second finger — so the first chords connect naturally.
Ukulele strumming
Strum with the nail of your index finger over the point where the neck meets the body. Start with down-strums, then try D-DU-UDU.

Common questions about learning ukulele
Is ukulele easy to learn?
Many beginners find it approachable: there are only four strings, nylon strings are soft on the fingers and several basic chords use one or two fingers. Like any instrument, it still takes regular practice.
How do I tune a ukulele?
Use a tuner and tune the strings, from the one closest to your chin, to G, C, E and A. Re-check all four, because tightening one string can slightly change the others.
What are the easiest ukulele chords?
C and A minor each use one finger. F and G come next. Together they cover a huge number of popular songs.
Can I learn ukulele at home on my own?
Yes. Short daily practice with step-by-step lessons works well. Recording yourself helps you notice muted strings or uneven strumming.
